Circulation Water Pump - CWIP Project
The Challenge
A very large circulation water pump had to be installed in place of the old unit. High precision was necessary for the new installation.
A design plan was required to help assure that minimal issues were encountered when removing and replacing the older unit. The replacement required a new sole plate mounting base to fit the new pump into existing connections. Laser scanning was performed to help model the area.
Our Metrology Services also performed real-time, leveling and alignment measurements to help the rigging team assure that the discharge sole plate was level and within .001” of the final design position. Platforms were modeled to be removed and replaced so that direct replacements could be fabricated due to salt-induced environmental deterioration. There were no accurate drawings available.
3D scanning and modeling of the current environment was utilized, which allowed for virtual fit checks for the new replacements in position against existing locations. This effort allowed installation with no-post fabrication adjustment or rework, saving a significant amount of time on the project.
The 3D scanned area was modeled using the new virtual pump model connected inside the existing space to be revised.
The Results
A perfect ‘factory-like’ fit with no shims or adjustments to shims required, and alignment with stress-free positioning, and level was achieved the first time. The platforms fit in with no post-adjustments.
